Computer Engineering
Requirements for Program Entrance
The minimum requirements for entering the Computer
Engineering Program (Code 171) in the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering are the following:
Completion of 26 hours of acceptable credit for
a degree in the School of Engineering. Of these 26 hours
of credit, at least 18 must be from the courses required
in the Computer Engineering Freshman year, excluding English,
Humanities, and Social Science courses. In addition to requiring
a 2.2 average for all courses presented, it is required
that the 18 credits yield at least a 2.5 average. The application
form states exactly how the GPA is calculated. Calculus
I and II must also be completed before admittance. In addition
to the GPA and prerequisite requirements, Computer Engineering
students must also have a permanent (as opposed to a course)
computer account capable of receiving electronic mail.
In addition to this basic requirement, the ECE Department
requires that the student have a C or better in English 101.
Note that English 102 is now a prerequisite for ECE 206L.
For transfer students, admission to the program will
depend upon an evaluation of the student's transcript by the
ECE Department using the above requirements as guidelines.
The core curriculum, effective fall 1999, appears
on page 10. (Note: the student will be put on the program
that is in effect at time of admittance to the department,
not when admitted to UNM.) It is the student's responsibility
to fulfill all the degree requirements. The list of acceptable
Humanities and Social Science courses appears on page 12 along
with requirements that the set of courses must satisfy. Finally,
on page 16 is a prerequisite flow chart that visually shows
the sequence in which certain courses must be taken. If the
recommended sequence is not followed, the student may find
he or she is unprepared for some course.
