Copyright Law – What is it?
U.S. Copyright Law and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) are designed to protect the rights of the authors of creative works. The DMCA addresses copyrighted creative works in the digital age.
You Are Breaking The Law if You:
• Use Peer-To-Peer (P2P software includes products such as Bit Torrent, LimeWire, and Napster, etc.) to share copyright protected files without the author's permission.
• Share copyright protected files without the author's permission.
• Use software designed to circumvent copyright protection of multimedia files, software, etc.
Why You Should Comply:
• The CopyRight Act and the DMCA, which updates the former, are both Federal Laws, and violating any law is also a violation of University Policy. Violating DMCA is also a violation of the Acceptable Computer Use Policy (UBPPM 2500).
• Violation of UNM policy can result in sanctions up to and including expulsion from UNM.
• Civil and/or Criminal Actions could also result from Copyright and DMCA violations.
