EE Challenge Examinations
Challenge examinations may be administered to students
to establish credit for courses in the Electrical Engineering
program. This is subject to restrictions of the UNM catalog.
A student may not challenge a course which he/she has taken
previously at UNM, including courses with W, WP and WF grades.
A course can be challenged only once. For students who were
exposed to non-transferable similar material at another institution,
the amount of effort required to review for a challenge examination
is a major consideration. Frequently, the effort required
to review for a challenge examination may be comparable to
actually taking the course. The procedures for challenging
a course are:
- An Electrical Engineering advisor reviews a student's
background and recommends a course challenge to the Associate
Chairman.
- The Associate Chairman reviews the recommendation
of the advisor and suggests an appropriate instructor to
administer the challenge examination.
- The student obtains the necessary university form
and pays the appropriate fees for the course challenge.
The authorization form is then signed by the Associate Chairman
and by the Associate Dean of Engineering.
- The student takes the challenge examination and
receives a credit or no- credit grade by the examiner.
There is no fixed format for a challenge. For a lecture
course, a challenge may require that a student take a special
comprehensive final examination. Alternatively, for example,
the examiner may require that one take the periodic examinations
of a section of his/her course during an academic session
and then take the final examination. The intent of the challenge
is to determine that the student knows the course material
and that the knowledge and experience is equivalent in all
respects to the course content as described in the UNM Catalog
and as reported to ABET. Challenges of laboratory courses
must demonstrate oral and written communication, proficiency
in laboratory practice, satisfy any design requirements, and
show a proficiency in the related theory.
