 Open House Draws a Crowd

11/24/2005

More than 250 guests were welcomed by the School of Engineering at its open house on Nov. 15. ECE's students, prospective students, parents and faculty were well represented at the event, exchanging insights and questions about electrical engineering and computer engineering and enjoying the many demo's and project displays. With New Mexico's only accredited computer engineering program, as well as an electrical engineering graduate program ranked #31 among U.S. public universities (by U.S. News & World Report), ECE's faculty and staff were proud to expound on the education the department provides for its students.

ECE's 30 professors represent the state's largest faculty in EE and CompE, and that's not counting the department's 27 research and adjunct professors. ECE has at least 13 research laboratories, and students study at a heavily research-oriented campus rated by Carnegie Foundation as a "doctoral/research extensive" university. In fact, ECE had more than $14 million in research funding in academic year 2004-05.

Visitors were able to learn more about ECE and the school's other departments, as well as visit the virtual reality demo conducted by Prof. Tom Caudell, Panaiotis, and their students, the laser show put on by Spankey Speis, the Tesla coil demonstration by Lee Terry, and the IDMARS lab team's robot demo's.

Visitors who were not able to catch everything they wanted to see, or who would like a tour of the ECE building and its laboratories, should contact Chaouki Abdallah, the department's chair, at 277-0298, or Frances Strong, ECE communications/PR, at 277-3156.
